I’ve never known a nakedness so startling as the uncovering of eyes that had always been bespectacled.

Such a private moment; such a baring; such a view into the reality of another.

  1. So very true Jean. I’ve worn glasses most of my life and there is a whole language around when and how glasses are worn and removed. There is a very funny sitcom here called “The Big Bang Theory”. Four of the main characters are male professors working in science departments of universities in California. The fifth member of the cast is a young woman called Penny who is an aspiring actress working in a restaurant while she waits for her break in acting. A lot of the humor is around the difference in intelligence between Penny and the Prof – but Penny often comes out ahead because she has common sense and a great intuition. This short outtake is at a time when Penny is trying to figure out a way to be smart, like her boyfriend professor.

  2. I’ve worn contact lenses since I was 11, but now, suddenly, they don’t work so well, so I’m ‘behind glasses.’ I find it a good place to hide sometimes. And yes, then I feel much more vulnerable when I take my glasses off.

  3. Nakedness can come in many forms..not only the not wearing of glasses or garments. We cover ourselves in a cloak of feelings, or beliefs..others see us but not always the real person that we are..We put forth our best of ourselve..Sometime letting go of feelings that bind us or opening up our eyes to what we have closed our minds too is a form of nakedness ..freeing ourselves from those beliefs and bindings of deep rooted feelings. Shredding can also be freeing to our bodies and soul…

      1. I would also say that a person who has had the same hair style or very long hair must have that naked feeling when it gets cut and is styled differently about a man with a beard or moustache that gets it cut or shaved off..same naked feeling…

  4. There are some people that I have never seen without their glasses so they would be naked without them. I need mine but confess that I take them off whenever I can…vanity I suppose or just don’t like my current frames. And the eyes are the window of the soul someone wrote.

    1. Hi CC, it can be such a revelation when you eventually see someone who seems to always wear glasses suddenly without them.
I remember when I got my first pair about ten years ago, I insisted that they had to make a fashion statement. I think the first pair are a bit like a first car ~ special. Now, I adopt a much more practical approach akin to seeing a car as a ‘lump of tin’ after being one to cry as I said goodbye to my first one.
I think it’s true about eyes being the window of the soul ~ however one defines same.
