The Glory of Sport

It’s great to be Irish tonight as we revel in our soccer team making it through to the knock-out stages of EURO 2016.

So good to see such joy, especially among young kids for whom wins like tonight’s against Italy will be their inspiration.

Sport is one of my abiding passions for a host of reasons. Most important is the way it is a cauldron of emotion that beats war and violence hands down.

C’mon Ireland and Northern Ireland!

  1. I don’t get over-excited over sport these days but even I couldn’t resist a fist-pump as that goal went in. And one of either NI or Wales into the last eight 🙂
Also I think team sport – soccer in particular (and GAA in Ireland) – has become a wonderful modern substitute for warlike, aggressive behaviour. If soccer caught on in the Middle East maybe they’d start having some fun and quit their murderous ways.
